Đà Nẵng

Located along Vietnam's stunning central coastline, Đà Nẵng perfectly bridges the gap between historic charm and modern coastal energy. Famous for its sun-drenched beaches, luxury resorts, and dramatic mountain landscapes, it offers a vibrant change of pace. During our drive from Huế to Hội An, my family and I turned our transfer into an action-packed day trip through Đà Nẵng, exploring its iconic mountain passes, ancient ruins, and architectural marvels.

Stay

• Coastal Day Base & Transit Hub: While we used this leg of the trip as an active exploration day en route south, Đà Nẵng’s prime location along the coast makes it an ideal launching pad for exploring iconic landmarks like the Hải Vân Pass and Marble Mountains before settling into nearby Hội An or staying at one of Đà Nẵng’s beachfront resorts.

Activities

• Hải Vân Pass: Connecting Huế with Đà Nẵng, this breathtaking mountain pass skirts the coastline to offer sweeping views over the ocean and city skyline. The city’s name actually translates to "mist rising from the sea," and watching the coastal clouds roll across the peaks made the drive memorable.

• Dragon Bridge: Built in the 21st century, this modern engineering monument stretches across the Han River in the shape of a massive yellow dragon. On weekend evenings at 9 PM, the dragon breathes real fire and water! While we missed the night show, recording our drive right across its back toward the dragon's head was still a highlight.

• Marble Mountains (Thủy Sơn): A cluster of five marble and limestone hills named after the natural elements—Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth. We hiked Water Mountain (Thủy Sơn), exploring winding stone steps, serene sanctuaries like Tam Thai Pagoda, Linh Ứng Pagoda, and the massive Huyền Không Cave, where sunlight streams through natural ceiling openings.

• Bà Nà Hills & The Golden Bridge: Soaring up to Sun World at the top of the mountain requires a thrilling 30-minute cable car ride suspended high above the forest canopy and misty peaks. At the summit sits the world-famous Golden Bridge, held aloft by two colossal stone hands emerging from the mountain.

• Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary: Located southwest of the city, this UNESCO site translates to "Beautiful Mountain" and served as a sacred spiritual center for the ancient Champa Kingdom starting in the 4th century. Exploring these red-brick temple ruins offered an incredible look into the deep history of Central Vietnam's indigenous Cham culture.

Eats

• Mì Quảng at Bếp Xưa: A quintessential Central Vietnamese staple originating from Quảng Nam province. These wide rice noodles are tossed with tender meat, fresh local herbs, crushed peanuts, a savoury splash of concentrated broth, and a crispy toasted sesame rice cracker for crunch.

• Fresh Seafood Feast at Hải sản Mộc quán: With Đà Nẵng being an active fishing hub, a seafood feast was non-negotiable! We selected our live catch straight from the restaurant's saltwater tanks to be prepared fresh on the spot. Our epic table spread included:

  • Fresh raw oysters & lemongrass pork skewers

  • Crispy fried spring rolls & vibrant pomelo seafood salad

  • Grilled eggplants with scallion oil & BBQ pork with kimchi

  • Steamed crab & crab tossed in rich Singapore chilli sauce

  • Steamed lobster & luscious garlic butter lobster

Driving along the coastal roads of Đà Nẵng provided the ultimate mix of mountain views, grand architecture, and unforgettable seafood.
